Field Notes - Kelpie

Jesst Jachorien, intrepid biologist and explorer who travels the world cataloging dangerous and mysterious fauna from around the world of Gaia, returns with a new field notes entry — the kelpie!

A green horse-like creature with fins instead of back legs, with what looks like kelp growing on it.

Kelpie - the lonesome swamp beast. Omnivores that can and will attack people, but fairly harmless if left alone. Despite being solitary creatures, they have developed symbiotic relationships with other swamp fauna.

A kelpie appeared very briefly in the short story “Scarlet”, found in Colors of Magic. They used to be common in Espon, but there have been almost no sightings in the past 500 years or so — victims of the Empire’s drive to get rid of the dangerous or magical creatures of the land.
